Why Is Dancing a Great Fitness Activity?
Low Impact
Dancing is a low-impact activity that is easy on the joints. The key is finding the right style that gives you the right amount of exercise & impact. Styles like the waltz and some tangos, with slow, fluid movements won’t tax your joints and will keep you dancing for long periods of time.
Improved Flexibility
Flexibility is important for all activities, as it helps to prevent injury. Dancing is a great way to improve your flexibility and range of motion – meaning the amount of movement around a specific joint or body part. Have tight hips? Loosen them up with a spicy salsa dance or a flowing Viennese waltz. Consistent practice of dance steps tests your body’s range of motion and helps to increase that range through gradual progress and eventually leading to freedom of movement.
Balance & Coordination
Ballroom dancing requires keeping your center of balance stable to make sure you don’t lose your step as you glide, twist, and turn. Doing this repeatedly helps to build and stabilize your core muscles, leading to better balance and more coordinated moves on the dance floor.
“Movements that we typically do in our daily life, like walking, taking the stairs, and common workouts like treadmills and cycling, occur in the sagittal plane, but dance works your body from all planes, including lateral and rotational, which turns on and conditions all muscles, meaning no muscle is left behind.” – Jonathon Tylicki
Feel the Burn
Dancing is an awesome full-body workout. It’s estimated that you burn between 300 – 500 calories per hour of ballroom dancing (depending on the dance style). Your heart is pumping, your core is engaged, and you are working many muscle groups as you step and twirl around the room.
Healthy Heart
Maintaining a healthy heart is important for overall and life-long health. There are many factors that put your heart at risk (stress, diet, environment, etc) and the best way to combat those factors is through a healthy diet and exercise. Regular activity increases aerobic capacity, lowers blood pressure, and improves the ratio of “good” to “bad” cholesterol. The best news is that dance has been shown to have all the benefits of other forms of exercise, in addition to the others mentioned above.
“We want the opportunity to make you the best dancer you can be. Share with us your goals and we will work with you to meet them. We believe that dance can solve many issues – physical, mental, and spiritual. We care about your journey into dance and want to help you find your inner dancer.” – Marina Vlasova, studio owner.
